Complexity Science has been around for over two decades. And yet, it has been unable to produce a definition of complexity not to mention a measure thereof. The numerous definitions and metrics of complexity allow to study strings of bits or pieces of computer code but are unable to treat corporations, markets, economies, financial products or modern engineering systems.
"Practical Complexity Management" is an inter-disciplinary account of how a recently developed concept of complexity may be used in diverse fields, ranging from economics to engineering, social sciences or medicine. The text is unique in that it provides the first concrete examples of actually measuring and rationally managing complexity from a quantitative point of view. The concepts conveyed in the book have been developed by Ontonix, a company pioneering a quantitative approach to complexity and its effective management.

Dr. Jacek Marczyk established himself as a leader in applying advances in computer technology to address practical problems when he established the accepted methodologies to simulate car crash prior to the turn of the century. I have had the honor and privilege of working closely with Jacek Marczyk over many years. My personal knowledge of how the physical world works comes from an in-depth experience gained from being the training officer responsible for training crews to operate nuclear propulsion plants in the Navy, a position gained following operation of those plants during construction acceptance and shock testing and operations, build on a degree in Nuclear Engineering from MIT. A key tenet in operating nuclear propulsion plants in a dynamic environment that could readily involve combat, is that actions are not taken without knowledge of what will happen. Orders are NOT given based on assumptions, or what one thinks might be right – knowledge of what will happen when an order is given is required. Dr. Marczyk's means of creating fitness landscapes, system maps, and complexity metrics provides a way to capture and use knowledge to make decisions involving systems that scale beyond well beyond nuclear propulsion plant operations. It is hoped that the practical methods espoused by Dr. Marczyk can be more broadly adopted. They work.
